Which one is right for me?
Let’s summarise. If you want access to the wholesale market choose from LocalVolts or Amber, or, if you’re not ready for wholesale, you can take advantage of the Time of Use option from your energy retailer.
Choose LocalVolts if ↓
If you have a well-sized system and/or a non-RedEarth system, or you want to share and sell energy to your other properties, friends, or family, and you’re located outside Victoria, LocalVolts is ideal. It offers lower buy prices and full control over your trades without a price guarantee. Having a well-sized system keeps you safe during high buy prices and allows you to sell your energy at the high price, earning you money.
Choose Amber if ↓
For those who prioritise an easy-to-read bill and an easy-to-use retailer app, Amber is the best option. It also provides a price guarantee which provides assurance you won’t get a high bill if your system stops working. However, this guarantee does increase your every day per-kWh buy price as compared to LocalVolts.
Choose Time of Use if ↓
If you have a smaller system, are not energy trading, or prefer the security of a set tarriff, you always have the option to move to the “time of use” option on your energy plan.
Time of Use (TOU) energy tariffs charge different electricity prices based on the time of day. These tarriffs are designed to encourage customers to use less electricity during peak times, when demand on the electricity network is highest.
