How a Yarra Valley property cut grid reliance by storing excess solar

Project Snapshot

Project Snapshot

Installer: ProFX and Atrics Electrical

Project: Large residential estate and farm, Yarra Valley, Victoria

System: 50 kW inverter with 240 kWh RedEarth Dingo battery energy storage system (BESS), integrated with an existing 100kW solar farm

Commissioned: 2026

Challenge: Capture excess solar generation, reduce grid reliance and maximise the value of an existing solar investment.

Outcome: Reduced grid electricity consumption by around 50% while storing surplus solar energy for use overnight, improving energy efficiency and lowering operating costs.

“The Dingo system has benefitted the site so well, reducing their energy needs by at least half, and now they can store all of that excess solar energy that was going out to the grid.”

The challenge.

This Yarra Valley property combines a luxury home with extensive farming operations, including irrigation pumps, machinery, swimming pools, heat pumps and air conditioning. Together, these created an average electricity demand of around 1,000 kWh per day.

Although a 100 kW solar farm had already been installed, the property regularly exported 200–300 kWh of surplus solar energy back to the grid each day. Rather than losing this valuable renewable energy, the owners wanted a way to store it and use it when the sun wasn’t shining.

The solution.

Working with ProFX and Atrics Electrical, RedEarth supplied a 50 kW / 240 kWh Dingo battery energy storage system (BESS) designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing solar installation.

The Australian-made system stores excess solar generated during the day and automatically powers the property during the evening and overnight, maximising self-consumption and reducing reliance on grid electricity. Its modular design also allows additional battery capacity or solar generation to be added as the property’s energy requirements grow.

The results.

The completed system has delivered significant benefits, including:

  • Reduced grid electricity consumption by approximately 50%
  • Captured 200–300 kWh of excess solar energy each day for use after sunset
  • Maximised the return on the existing 100kW solar investment
  • Lowered operating costs across both the residence and farm
  • Delivered a scalable energy solution that can grow with future demand

For installer ProFX, the project also demonstrated the value of RedEarth’s Australian manufacturing, responsive engineering support and straightforward installation process, enabling the system to be commissioned efficiently with ongoing technical backing.

Looking ahead.

As energy demand continues to grow on large rural properties and premium residential estates, battery energy storage is becoming an essential way to maximise solar generation and reduce dependence on the grid.

With a scalable RedEarth battery system now in place, the property is well positioned to further expand both its solar generation and battery capacity, delivering even greater energy independence into the future.
