What is an on-grid solar storage system?

On-grid systems — as their name would imply — are connected directly to the utility grid. They aren’t self-sufficient or independent like their off-grid cousins are. Your on-grid solar storage system lets you store excess power generated during the day and use it later when you need it.

Your on-grid system can also feed excess power back into the grid, which means you’ll be able to receive feed-in tariffs from your utility provider! On-grid systems are a wise choice if you have grid connection, and you want the peace of mind of never running out of power – even when it’s a dull day and the sun isn’t shining.

On-grid solar systems have two primary components:

  1. Solar panels: Collects sunlight and converts it into direct current (DC) electricity.
  2. Grid-tie inverter: Converts the DC electricity produced by the panels into alternating current (AC) electricity – which is compatible with the appliances in your home. 

How do on-grid solar storage systems work?

On-grid solar storage systems follow a linear process to power your property and produce a consistent supply of electricity:

  1. Your solar array uses photovoltaic (PV) panels to capture sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. 
  2. A grid-tie inverter converts the DC electricity into AC electricity – which the appliances in your home or business can use.
  3. When your system generates more electricity than you use, the excess power feeds back into the utility grid. On the other hand, when your system doesn’t produce enough electricity for what you need — this tends to happen during the night or on a particularly cloudy day —your saved power can be drawn back from the grid.
