People are turning to solar energy in droves and when you consider the benefits, it’s easy to see why. A battery energy storage system (BESS) can be retrofitted for use with existing solar panel systems or purchased as a package with panels included. There are several reasons why consumers, be they residential property owners or businesses, opt for solar energy with a BESS.
Renewable energy is gaining traction as consumers join the race to cut carbon emissions by installing solar systems at their homes or businesses. According to the International Energy Agency taskforce’s 2020 report, systems combining residential solar panels with battery storage have the potential to reduce emissions up to 10 times more than coal-generated electricity.
Unfortunately, extreme weather events and overloaded grids are forecast to become more common. For homes and businesses connected to the grid, a BESS can provide confidence that electricity supply won’t be lost in the event of a blackout. Essential household or business loads such as lights and fridges can be set up to automatically transfer to the BESS during a power outage, preventing loss of perishable goods and productivity.
Solar is now the cheapest form of energy. Generating your own energy from solar panels means you avoid using (and paying for) electricity from the grid. A BESS provides further savings by storing excess energy generated during the day and using it to power your property at night. This reduces the amount of electricity imported from the grid at peak time, reducing bills significantly.
Government rebates and incentives further sweeten the deal. The federal government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme provides a financial incentive for households and businesses to install small-scale renewable energy systems, and there are various others offered by state and territory governments.
So, while the up-front cost of investing in a solar panel-BESS combo is initially greater, many consumers are deciding that the benefits of future-proofing their properties ultimately provide a worthwhile return on investment.
